2011 Grand Marshals
George & Joan Schupback
The Sterling Price Days Festival Committee is pleased to announce that George and Joan Schupback have been named Grand Marshals of the 48th Annual Sterling Price Days Festival to be held September 7, 9, 10 & 11, 2011 in Keytesville. Over the Festival’s 48 year history those who have made significant commitments and contributions to the community have been recognized as Grand Marshal(s), which is the Festival’s highest distinction. George is a lifetime resident of Keytesville and Joan a resident for over 60 years.
George Schupback was born in Keytesville, MO in 1930. Upon graduation from Keytesville High School in 1949, he went to work for Gustin-Bacon Insulation in Kansas City. Joan Schupback was born in 1932 in Lagonda, Missouri. Upon graduation from Marceline High School in 1949, at the age of 16, she went to work for Walsworth Publishing as a typist. George and Joan were married in Marceline on October 14, 1950.
In 1952 George was inducted into the United States Air Force and obtained basic training in Wichita Falls, Texas. Joan drove to Texas every couple of weeks to be with her husband during his training. Upon completion of his basic training he boarded a troop train to Illinois. During this trip the dining car caught fire and there was some concern about meals during this long journey from Texas to Illinois. He was assigned to attend metallurgy and machinist school and was trained as a welder and then became an instructor. During his two years service in the Air Force their first child, Debbie, was born. Upon discharge from the armed services, George returned to Keytesville and worked with his father in the family farming business.
In 1959 George and Joan along with their two children, Debbie and Lana, moved to Armstrong, Missouri and rented a farm and remained there until 1962, when they returned to Keytesville and purchased an 80 acre farm where they have lived ever since. By this time their third child, Terri had arrived and George not only farmed his acreage but worked with his father in their family farm business. George has been farming ever since and is still very active in the family farming business which he operates with their fourth child, George E.
In 1963 Joan attended beauty school and established a business which she operated in Keytesville for 43 years, retiring in 2006. When asked about retiring and about what she missed, Joan replied “People, I miss that”. And when asked about her passion now she said “I Love My Home” which explains why she spends so much time in the yard mowing, tending to her flowers and
landscaping and making her home warm and inviting for her family, kids and grandchildren.
George has had a passion for cars from a very early age and that has not changed as he has collected eleven antique and classic cars. He is currently in the process of restoring a 1974 Corvette and he participates in local car & auto shows winning several trophies.
George and Joan are members of the First Baptist Church and the Bethany Cemetery Association and have been actively involved in the community over the years. George was on the school board in Armstrong and Keytesville, a FSA board member, a Chariton County Mutual Insurance Company board member, past member of the Moose Lodge and is still a member of the American Legion Post #7 in Brunswick. Joan was a 4-H leader and a member of the Keytesville PTA, Band Boosters, Friendly Circle Club, Women of the Moose and the Sterling Price Committee. She also was a member of the Sigma Epsilon Sorority.
They enjoy traveling, dancing and those occasions when all 36 members of their family come home to visit them.
George & Joan’s children and their spouses are: Debbie & Gale Kahler of O’Fallon, Missouri, Lana and Roger George of Salisbury, Missouri, Terri Lukehart of Columbia, Missouri and George E. & Jennifer Schupback of Keytesville, Missouri. They have 11 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.
George and Joan tend to shy away from the spotlight and compliments but are still very interested in the Keytesville Community. The Price Committee expresses its gratitude for their participation in the 48th Annual Festival as Grand Marshals.
